Hello,

I've been very busy reading through the forum and visiting the wiki site linked from here, and have my rent money in $20's laid out in front of me, to play with familiarizing myself money and with terminology meanings and how to know them to see them. This is all a new language for me, kind of like MSL (money as a second language ) and I'm having fun with it.

(I decided to bring my rent money home from the bank machine, in 20's, to play and learn with. Too bad the machines no longer put out anything lower than 20's )

I spotted a $20 and am wondering if this is what's referred to in here as "radar" and/or "replacement" issue:

I actually have another question about "changeovers" term. What makes them significant???

Hi Dottir and welcome to our forum,

Yes it is a Radar.

First the 5398935 note you have here is classified a Radar, the serial number reading the same forwards as backwards, it is more specifically a four digit radar where 4 different digits make up the serial radar number. There are other varieties of radars consisting of 3, 2 or the 1 Digit (Solid numbered) that really command a collector’s premium.

Second the EYN prefix denotes this as from a Changeover series where the actual changeover was the Printing Date. Indicated on the back bottom edge of the note when the note was made, the Printing date changed from 2004 to 2005. It may seem a small change but it is a significant change and thus classified as a new variety from its previous year version.

Maybe I'll get lucky and solid numbered one/s will come through my hands and I can offer them up to folks in here. Sadly, my current sitreps mean I can't behave like a collector and hang onto cash as its needed for survival ... but if sitreps change, I would have a lot of fun for sure. I love the whole area of "collecting" whatever and money is small (to store and handle etc). Its just plain exciting, interesting, and FUN ... I have to start small and who knows, what starts a hobby could maybe support its own growth as I go if I keep on with it.

So much to learn, so little time ......................................................

I just looked at the list of replacement notes and this number range is listed in there, so, what I have is basically a "Radar Replacement Changeover" bill ... correct? Is this "special" or no biggy?

Hi! Usually these things command a premium for each categorical upgrade per se.

So it is something special, but it doesn't mean that the prices of each category are actually combined into a total price of a piece like this.  But you should expect to have about what the typical radar would be for it.

So I was on the right track with my questions about "3 ways/special" so thanks for letting me know that, as well as an idea of "values" ranges for it. As far as value for THIS 20 ... I don't know ...

This bill is obviously circulated, and I haven't yet learned all of the grading and it's terms - will work on that It's used, shows that a bit, has a fold/crease line and about quarter-inch/I think less, small tear at the edge and off to the side of the crease, but not on the crease, and still has a lot of firmness. It's been handled, but not abused

Unfortunately I can't take pics and upload them here ... cdrom drive died and waiting for a working one to arrive in the mail so I can reinstall the Kodak software before I can post pics again. Will have deposited that 20 into my landlords account by end of next week before that cdrom drive gets here though BUT I'm sure I'll come across other money to post pics of ... and I'll be able to plan ahead a bit to be able to hang onto any good bills that come my way.

I mentioned to someone that I sometimes get very crisp brand new looking older 20's mixed in with newer ones from the bank machines. I wish I'd found this interest and site when I had those 20's ... now I wonder what I I might have lost out on ... OH NO!

Ahh!  Don't spend it!   There are collectors here who would love to have it!   Pass those gems on!

Serisously, if they are circulated, there is generally not much of a premium.  You can verify this with others... 

Offer it to the forum, at say $24 incl. postage, and I bet you will have made another collector very happy.

I might put my name into that hat- I would have to look at my collection tonight though first. :-)

I don't know mailing rates but am sure it would cost more than $4 to mail it secure to anyone (wouldn't it???) unless I just put a regular snailmail stamp on it and sent it by dogsled pace and I'd be extremely leery of doing that and would worry about it arriving at destination etc I'm also tucked into a smaller community in SE BC corner and mail delivery times are ridiculously slow too. Takes almost 2 weeks to get a letter between Toronto and here

I also don't have much flexibility at this moment as far as "time" goes. I likely wouldn't have payment/money back in time for rent deposit next week and am not able to juggle at the moment.  I truly wish I had known earlier so I could have budgetted because if someone really wanted this bill I hate to disappoint

Someone also mentioned to me that this bill would likely rate a radar value and may be worth between $30 and $40 as a best guess based on my description of condition etc, and probably closer to $30. I can see how a collector would be happy with $24 postage included Me too :p

In general, about life, I'm flexible and generous when I can be, unless I say otherwise and I'm not averse to considering haggling and barter in some situations, or giving good deals within reason or impulse.

I don't know if a deal could be worked out and completed in a timely way for me is all I'm saying. Not this go round? End of the month is in 5 days!

Lol-- well, if you have to spend it, you have to spend it.

To ship notes though, toss it flat in an envelope, wrap dark paper around it, OR  cut out a coulpe rectangles from a cereal box... and secure them in the envelope, and send. Should cost one stamp.  Of course, if the notes were Perfect UNC, you would not ship them this way- you might add a stiff support, and of course a safety holder.  For circulated notes, it ultimately is not neccessary.


But yeah...  55 cents :-) plus cost of envelope, plus cost of gas and time to run to post office.

Well, if I have a little unexpected windfall between now and rent deposit day I will hang onto it and offer it up should anyone want it ... how's that?

Too bad you we aren't local to each other, then I could just walk it over to you if you wanted it, having no expenses for trade, and I could keep all the profits

You have to start collecting some time and finding a radar note is a great place to start and use the forum to help find what new replacement prefixes to look for in circulated notes everyone has to start somewhere.

I've received a list of some newer replacement notes prefixes from a kind soul in here and will study it.

Have just been reading a bit more on radar notes and they really do sound hard to come by ... I read in a site that there are something like 10,000 of them in a batch of 10,000,000 (if I got the figures correct?) Makes me not want to see this bill go back and get lost into public circulation again if I can help it! (I think I'm getting hooked here!)

Does anyone really want this radar?

I have to deposit tomorrow, but was thinking that if someone really REALLY wants this radar, that maybe my neighbor would be into trading $20's and hanging onto my radar, trading it back with me within a week or two and that way its not gone back into circulation and someone in here has a shot at having it for their collection.

I'm in no position at this time to hoard $20 so it will be spent soon but if someone is really interested and my neighbor is willing, we can work something out so you have the radar and I'm not out ... but talk to me fast as tomorrow is deposit day and I'd need to approach neighbor etc ...

If I hear from no one it will be deposited tomorrow

FYI - Having had no contact from anyone here, I assumed no interest, so the radar went back into circulation today.

You never know though, small community, could be very funny to have it land back in my hands next week or in future. Has anyone ever had that happen, same bill circculating back to you? (small communities I could see this potential)
