One of the $50s I picked up today has a partial teller stamp that reads

“Deposit only to the credit of…” and then the transit number 37162-004

A search reveals that this is the Falconbridge Highway branch of TD Bank
2208 Lasalle Blvd
Sudbury, Ontario
P3A 2A8

Pretty neat, eh?

June 26th:

I was taking a closer look at one of the circulated $1 notes I found this week and I noticed that it had a date written on the back.

I like the old fashioned loops on the numbers.  You can tell that the person who wrote on the note was comfortable writing in cursive which is becoming a lost art in this digital age.

“13-5-78”

I wonder what was going on on May 13th, 1978?

July 27th:

I was looking through a few of the notes I found recently and I noticed a few had messages on them.

This $2 note has the name “Nicole Wright” and the number 3835 written on the back.

If someone out there knows someone named Nicole Wright who lost a $2 note in the early 1990s, tell her that I found it!  🤣

The 1973 $1 has been used as scratch paper, with the numbers 2286 crossed out and 2684 circled.

This US $2 has a faint date stamp Feb 24 79.

And finally, this 1967 $1 has the name, phone number and address of someone named Elizabeth Smith who lived at 1 Bloem Ave in the old City of York, now part of Toronto.  There is also tape residue on the back of this note and I believe it was a keepsake, maybe from a friend at school or summer camp.  The writing looks like it was done by a kid.

Of course, someone had to ruin this perfectly good multicolour $100 note I found today by writing their initials “L.M.” On Sir Robert Borden’s forehead.

October 5th Coin Expo finds plus leftover finds from the Guelph coin show. Part 1

I bought some cool notes at the last couple of shows I attended.  Here we go!

This 1900 shinplaster has “Wallis Prisin”. (I think…) and some more unintelligible writing on it.

This 1937 $1 is dated  7-29-1953 and has something written in the signature panel “Trymorrha”? I really don’t know what it says…

October 5th finds, part 2:

This 1972 $20 has the date “Sept 24 1974” and a partial location which I assume is somewhere in Manitoba stamped on it twice.

This US $2 has the year 1978 stamped on it.

And someone saw fit to give the Queen a beard and a unibrow…

Oct 5th finds part 3:

These teller stamped notes contained interesting information. 

The 1979 $20 is from some Caisse Populaire (Credit Union).

This 1954 $10 has a pink stamp of death on it.  The transit number is 06342-003.
A quick search reveals it to be:

Unfortunately, I can’t figure out the date on the stamp.

The $1 note has the transit number 24452-001.
A quick search reveals it to be:

October 5th finds, part 4.

This 1954 $10 is defaced with the hand written date “Apr 8/71” on the back and the person also added “Mc” in front of the word “Dollars” on the front.  “McDollars”?  😂. Perhaps it was written by a disgruntled McDonald’s employee…

I think this one says "Walter"  and the last bit the old short form for Alberta was it Abta?

Oct 26th:

I received this birds $2 from Claude.  On the front it reads “BOB FROM MOM” and on the back it says either “DEARY” or “DEBBY 1989”.

I also noticed that this note is cut slightly out of register.  Under normal circumstances, would the tilt be enough for the note to carry a premium?

October 30th:

Finds from an old album?

I purchased these two shinplasters because of the hand written names and messages on them.  One of the notes is the 1900 issue and it has the name H. Pauline Erb written in pencil, the date July 22nd 1922 and “21 years old (overwritten 22 as if it was a mistake).

“Good Luck” is also written on the bottom margin.

The 1923 shinplaster is also miscut; see the imprint of the adjoining note on the front.

The second note has the inscription Ross Erb Sept 25th 1933.
On the bottom margin, it is inscribed Aunt Evlyn    Uncle Ben

These notes have appropriate dates that match the issue that would have been in circulation at the time and they must have come out of a family album.

October 31st dind:

I bought this ratty old $1 for face value for the stamp on it.  I think it says Aug 17 1964, but I could be wrong.

What do you think?

The M/P prefix came right after the 1967 commemorative issue so presumably wouldn't have been issued until late '67 or early '68.  Your eyes are better than mine though because that stamp just looks like a blue smudge to my eyes.

November 4th finds:

I bought a lot of circulated notes and there was writing on the back of this $1…
It reads “$30 Margo La Plante”
Unfortunately, the name is written on the back of an *FA replacement note!

This set of three $2 notes appears to be a keepsake dump.  I think the person’s name was Franz…

The first note says “From mummy 1995” then “Happy New Year 1995” Franz?
Love Mum

The second note says “From Grandma 1995” “Happy New Year Franz?”

And the third note says “From Aunty Peri 1995”.

Seeing notes like this for sale is ind of sad because it indicates that they are no longer treasured keepsakes…
I fear that my descendants will do the same thing to my collection when I’m gone.  Nobody else in my family collects anything and my nieces and nephews don’t use cash…
