Coins picked from circulation

So finally the mystery is no more. The mintage report is out with the RCM Annual Report:

2012 $1 Loonie (Old Style) Officially called Aureate Nickel as opposed to One Dollar (P) -  2,414,000

2012 $2 Toonie (Old Style) Officially called Two Dollars as opposed to Two Dollars (P) - 1,531,000

I have found at least 7 2012 old style toonies and only 1 old style 2012 loonie in circulation. Also the premium on the mint wrapped roll of loonie is higher than the premium on the mint wrapped roll of toonie. Maybe things will change.

One other interesting note for those who are into commemorative stuff from the Mint. Expect to pay higher prices in secondary market if you are not a Masters Club Member. The mint is planning for sell-outs. I have personally witnessed this recently with coin I wanted to buy and it was already being pre-sold at a higher price by a dealer. Normally dealers would start by offering it at the RCM price and increase the price after the mint is sold out. This is the first time I have encountered a pre-sale at a dealer at a higher price than the mint price.

thank you for the update Rupiah. So i guess the 2012 Loonie and toonie aren't as rare as we thought... on the other hand, of those 2,414,000 minted how many of them actually hit circulation?
Just as expected, the new 2012 loonies and toonies were mass produced 107,105,000 and 82,862,000 respectively. For the loonie it was the largest production since 1989 and the largest production for the toonie since 1996. It would not surprise me this year if the mint does not circulate any 2013 loonies or toonies. If they do, quantities would me much smaller.

Actually, I believe most of the old twoonies and loonies were destroyed during a truck crash last year involving these coins.   So most of these coins never made it to circulation.

interesting. $3M  worth of coins. But were the coins all 2012s?? This might explain why the original Loonies and toonies are so hard to find individually.

Yes, all the coins were 2012 issue $1 and $2 coins.  These were made early in the year.

Today at work, I picked up two pennies off of the floor.  One was a 1962 and the other was a 1964!  What are the odds of finding 2 young Elizabeth coins on the same day?  LOL.

Still have 20 boxes of pennies waiting to be searched, but I just haven't had the time...

I received a 2011 Boreal Forest toonie today.  This is only the second one I have ever received.  Still in nice shape too!

Nope...Just a regular coin.  Still don't see many of 'em though...

Got a 1968 nickel in change today.  Coins from the 20th century are getting tougher and tougher to find in circulation...

I found a lucky penny for the first time in awhile.  It's dated 1998 and was found in the lobby of a Royal Bank.  I still pick up every one I find...I can't help it.

Funny how the penny has so rapidly disappeared...I'm not surprised though.

we still have a variety store in town that dishes out pennies...
if it's 5.02 he still asks for 2 cents or gives you back 3 if you give 5.05
I thought the rule was 2 cents round down 3 cents round up...
atleast I always get 2 cents of free gas when I fill up  down the road 

Found a 2012 non-security (old) toonie. Although the reported quantities of 2012 old toonies is less than  the reported quantities of 2012 old loonie but I still have found more 2012 toonies than the 2011 loonies.

I am still running into plenty of toonies that are 1996 and plenty of loonies that are 1987. In a typical roll the proportion of first year coins:2012 security coins: all other coins is typically about 9:9:7.

I would have thought that with the alloy recycling program I would have had much less of the first year (1987, 1996) loonies and toonies.

The other day i looked through a full jar of pennies. Found a 1938 cent and also a US 1943 steel cent. They were not in great condition so they're not worth much.  Though the 1943 steel cents were very common, its the first time i find one in change.

I got a Grey Cup loonie in change yesterday.
