I Need some help with the last series of the 1954 $1000.
Modified portrait signed by Thiessen and Crow.

The books and post say that most of this 240,000 note series was destroyed...
Is that it for the info? I would like to know how many have survived.

I checked the serial number database but there doesn't seem to be any mention of 1954 in there.

My first post!

Even if they were truly rare, collectors don't seem interested in them.

The 1954 Thiessen-Crow $1,000 was printed and circulated somewhere around 1988 just before the release of the 1988 series. As a result only a handfull were actually circulated and the remainder were never circulated and destroyed. This is a very scarce note but unfortunately we may never know how many survived because very few people collect $1,000s. It is possible that there might have been an article about this posted in a CPMS journal.

I agree, collecting $1000 notes is not for everyone.

Thanks for the replies, tried to search online for some older journal articles but came up empty.
I will keep digging.

Cheers

The Bank of Canada has these serial numbers in their collection.
Seems they have a saved the beginning and the end of the 240,000 note range.

I don't think you will ever find out how many were destroyed, due to the fact that you will never know how many are still out there and how many of those were destroyed and will never be tracked or recorded

I expected to see a large void of serial numbers before I started a quick internet search for BC-44e and the signature combo...not so.

The ones I have found in a quick search don't really support a huge block of non-issued notes.
There are a few gaps of around 20,000 but this is in no way a comprehensive list.

I was able to get a response from the Bank Of Canada.

"In response to your inquiry, the 1954 $1,000 with the signatures of Governor Crow and Deputy-Governor Thiessen indeed had a limited print run. Due to a low demand for the note, the $1,000 was not redesigned for the Scenes of Canada series and printing of the 1954 series $1,000 continued until the Birds series was put into circulation. As mentioned in the catalogues most of the 1954 Thiessen/Crown $1,000 notes were destroyed. Just how many notes have survived is not known. The Bank of Canada does not record serial numbers when notes are destroyed therefore it is impossible to determine how many of a particular series let alone a specific signature combination have been destroyed. Furthermore, to my knowledge there is no registry to determine the existing population of the 1954 Thiessen/Crow $1,000. The Canadian Paper Money Society publishes registries of rare and scarce Canadian bank notes. You may want to contact the organization to see if a registry exists for the note. "

It echoes JB-2007's comments previously. Does anybody know if the Canadian Paper Money Society has published a registry on this? What about the note grading companies, do they publish a record of all of the notes they have graded?

Thanks Starman!

I don't think the CPMS has a register of 1954 $1000s of any signature variety.  The 1935 and 1937 $1,000 registers exist and have been published.
I once had A/K 1951132 but nobody was interested in it so it was spent and has probably been sent to the BoC for destruction years ago.  Maybe it was rescued -- I just noticed it's on the list above!

Hi Bob,

If you had a picture of the note posted on the internet when you had it for sale it might still be there. I didn"t record where I found the numbers :)

I'm still interested in finding out more about this serial number range so if anyone would like to message me with pictures of these notes I will keep a log and post the updates here.

Thanks

If there is such interest in this note, why not create a register for it and host it on the CPM Wiki?

Get in touch with 1971HemiCuda to get the ball rolling.

Thanks
