I went to friendly Royal Bank branch in the Ottawa Valley to make a deposit and the Teller told me that an older person made a deposit of 6 rolls of pennies about hour earlier. She mentioned that these roll of pennies were heavier than normal and I responded, why not. To my amazement, I noticed the head of King George VI on some of these rolls and I gladly took them home. It was a total of 6 rolls for $3. Once, I got home, I cracked open the rolls of pennies and I found 275 pennies dated 1951 and some of these pennies were in very good shape where I am not a certified grader but it appears that the vast majority were VF or better.
The remaining 25 pennies were dated 1947 Maple Lear and again in real good shape where these could be VF or better. For a $3 dollar investment, the 1951 pennies at a 20 cent or better catalogue price would score $55 while the 1947 ML are worth 20 to 25 cents as there were some blunt and pointed 7's and could be worth $5. This is better than by a coffee at the local Tim's.
The moral of the story, when a Teller asks if you are interested in pennies, don't turn it down.
No doubt this story will make Dean smile.
