Putting Terry Fox on the $5 Bill

Terry Fox is a Canadian hero. He campaigned to raise awareness and funding for cancer research by running his Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada 42-km daily run, on his prosthetic leg. By February 1981, the Marathon of Hope had raised $24.7 million or $1 for every Canadian. His run was interrupted just past the half-way point when the cancer reached his lungs, and ultimately took his life. Through his efforts, the 22-year-old showed Canadians the difference that an ordinary person could make through sheer willpower and determination.

Today, Terry Fox Runs are held every year, across the country, and around the world to raise money for cancer research. To inspire more Canadians to give $5 to the cause that Terry Fox championed:

The 2024 Fall Economic Statement announces that Terry Fox will appear on the next $5 bank note. Sir Wilfrid Laurier will move from the $5 bank note to appear on the next version of the $50 note.

I can't wait for the new Terry Fox $5 to come out. I wonder when it will be released to circulation, most likely 2027-2029 as the BoC is still designing the King Charles banknote.

If Laurier is moving to the $50 then Macdonald will likely be on the $100 which means King and Borden will no longer appear in any banknotes unless they put their faces as a effigy in coins which is least likely going to happen

Thanks for the information.

To be honest, I am highly surprised that Terry Fox has been chosen. Don't get me wrong. He deserves it. But I thought he had not much chance because of the cultural and political climate of the last couple of years, well,  decade.
But what will happen when (not if) the current goverment is thrown out of office and Mr Poilievre becomes the next PM?

To this day, I have not seen any new $5 bills in Newfoundland despite that there were plenty released outside Atlantic Canada.  Maybe the banks in Newfoundland are not ordering any until the Terry Fox $5s get released into circulation.  I bet, unlike the Desmond $10, there will likely be no long delays in the new $5s being released.  As I said before, the Desmond $10s took five years for them to be quite abundant in Newfoundland.

I bet the Fox fives will start at prefix IOA.

Newfoundland's relatively small population (545,880 as of October 2024 according to the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador's website) probably means that there is a lower demand for banknotes in the Province compared to other more populous areas of the country.  The banks have less reason to order new notes from the Bank of Canada if the demand isn't there to justify it.

Just my thoughts,
Dean

The serial number JHS2912607 appears on all Bank of Canada "Experimental" notes printed for marketing purposes since the Journey series (see attached images).

In fact, a 2001 $5 Journey with this same serial number was accidently released into the wild at a Bank of Canada unveiling of the new issue on March 27th, 2002.  It is currently the only reported serial numbered experimental note in a collector's hands.  The Bank of Canada confirmed its authenticity in the attached letter dated December 19th, 2003.

That's a great tidbit of knowledge, and how cool it must be for that collector to have such a unique note in their collection. Thanks for sharing canada-banknotes!

Its strange that in the Bank of Canada announcement above they state on their website:

"We have not yet started the design process for the new $5 bank note. We continue to work on the new $20 bank note, which we will issue in early 2027. The new $5 note will be issued sometime after that."

How do they then explain the image of the "experimental" Terry Fox vertical $5 note with JHS2912607 serial number that is circulating in the media news and online ?
