Are the two 1979 issues generally considered part of the multi-coloured series, a subset or an altogether separate series?  Please state your reasoning if you have an opinion.

thank you

They are often considered part of the so-called multicoloured series, but technically, they form their own 1979 series.

The reason they are considered a separate series is because the original intention of the Bank of Canada was to reissue ALL of the 1969-1975 notes in the same machine-readable format as the two 1979 notes and include some minor design tweaks at the same time. This never happened though because the Birds series was developed soon after to keep pace with banknote printing technology. (Slight rewording of what is included in the Charlton guide, p260, 17th Edition 2005)
