the teller at the bank gave me this bill. looks like an ink smear. just wondering if it is something unusual or worth keeping.

seeing as it only cost $10 I would keep it. Hard to tell if it is a error or the teller stamp who knows but a keeper

That's what I thought until I took a proper look. The ink looks purple to me. And not in any well defined pattern. Here is an enlarged portion.

Teller Stamps are very clean cut edges

Seems to follow the patern of the design filling in the triangle shapes which would more likely happen at the time of printing. IMO

Tellers often stamp the top note after they get a bundle put a wrapper on it. The stamp is not well defined because a stack of circulated notes is pillowy and that makes it difficult to get a clean impression.

I think it's a teller stamp.

It's ink from a teller stamp(s), pretty sure, nothing too special IMO.

In my opinion and being a TD Bank teller way back when... it strongly resembles a tellers stamp where the straight edge of the stamp caught the note.  As buxvet mentioned, the stamp is not well defined because of the pillowy of the bundle of 100 notes.  From the picture, it seems to be 3 stamp lines.  Looks like the teller that stamped it took 2 attempts and then another one for good measure.  

I had an ink smear on a new ten that was almost similar to that one (only less ink).  It nearly looked like a teller's stamp (1 almost line but it sporawled from thick to thin), but it was definitely an ink smear that might have even been produced from excess ink off the rollers.  It traced vertically was across the face, and there were bubble like droplets that dribbled down across the collar too.  The ink was pretty much the same colour (very dark purple/blue), probably from printing Mac's dark suit.  I would keep this note. What is the serial number?

I still cannot see the teller's stamp in this one. Looks like a proper smear to me. Here is my reasoning

A teller's stamp is about the width of that entire smear. Thus if that was a stamp then the teller must of completely missed the wrapper. Therefore, if the teller missed the wrapper then the stamp would be much more defined even when taking into consideration that a bundle of a 100 circulated notes is cushiony. If it was a tellers stamp then there would be at least one straight edge visible.

The ink is also scattered about the note, with mini smears at the top, middle and the bottom border of the note.

I think the only way to solve this one is through a poll

After reading your comments, I'm quite convinced that this is an actual printing error. The ink does cover a very large portion of the note, from the left of the security strip to just above the W in W.P.Jenkins.  Although it is possible someone actually spilled ink all over the note while trying to stamp it, that hypothesis just doesn't agree well with the pattern of ink on the note.

Also, when I examine the color of each pixel in photoshop, the colors of the smear resemble very closely the colors in mac's suit. For both, the darkest areas show up as black rgb(0,0,0) followed by very dark blues (0,0,30) or so... and the lighter areas continue to have a blue dominance eg. (100,100,125).  I really can't tell the two apart.

And what fun would it be spending $10 to keep it if I wasn't an actual error??

The serial number is BTA1505998 and the back is perfectly normal.

Any ideas on how commonly ink smears from excess ink would occur?
