When I was growing up, I always figured that one day I'd buy the first $1 bill of the 1954 series...  A/A 0000001...

Realistically, that likely won't happen, but I'm curious -- does anyone on the board know what happened to that bill?  Is it in the currency museum in Ottawa, or owned by a private collector, or...?

Also, if you could buy it, what price do you think it's worth?  Seeing as how's it's unique, I'd say the rarity factor of it would be extremely high.

Most, if not all, #1 notes are retained by the National Currency Collection, Currency Museum, at the Bank of Canada. You can search the collection online at www.currencymuseum.ca.

Thanks for the link.

I found it at http://www.currencymuseum.ca/eng/collection/view.php?objectid=1976.0018.00001.000

Surprised to see that it had an asterisk in the serial number, like a replacement note.

That's because it's actually the first 1954 $1 replacement. I think they do have the first regular issued note as well, but I don't know where it would be on the website.

As to the value of this note, I would guess it would sell anywhere from $9,000-$13,500. If the note is in uncirculated condition. (I just took a guess at how much I think this note would bring at auction)

Does that seem about right? Maybe a little more, maybe a little less?

That would probably be my estimate as well. Too bad it's in the national currency collection.

It might be better off there. Just imagine if a collector had passed away, and had this note in his collection, then the person that he leaves the collection to might just think its all worth nothing, and spends it  :o

I dont know, just a thought. It would probably never happen anyways.
